What AI search has done to the click

The strongest figure here is from Pew Research, who measured real browsing behaviour rather than surveying opinions about it. The rest is linked to whoever published it.

8% vs 15%

Users clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% of visits where none did — close to half the clicks, gone.

What the numbers do and do not say

They do not say search is finished. They say the shape of a result changed: an answer appears above the links, and roughly half the clicks that used to follow do not.

For a business, that turns one question into a different one. Ranking is a position among many — being fourth still put you in the running. Being named in an answer is binary. You are in the three companies the assistant lists, or the conversation happens without you.

The uncomfortable part, and the reason we do not sell this as a quick fix: some of it moves slowly. An assistant answering from training data will not know about a change until it is retrained. Assistants that answer from a live search move within weeks, which is why those are the ones worth re-measuring monthly and the ones worth working on first.

What nobody should do is guess. Most businesses have never asked an assistant who it recommends in their category — and the answer is usually specific, checkable, and not what the owner expected.
